PZLOCK (R)
Version 1.00
(C) Copyright 1992
PZSoftware (R)
IBM PC Version
This program is presented as
FREEWARE.
================================================================================
First notice, I am a horrible speller, if there is a simple spelling error
in the DOC files please correct it and let me know about it so I can correct
it for future versions, that or find a good spell checker.
================================================================================
Thank you for trying PZLOCK v1.0. PZLOCK is a simple program designed
to add a little security to your PC from people turning on your computer
and using it whenever they feel like. Mind you, this program does not
provide any protection to the system if the computer is already in dos.
This program is designed only to provoide protection on boot up.
================================================================================
NOTICE: Although is program is designed for security, PZSoftware is not
liable for any damages caused to your system because of the software
failure. You use this program at your own risk! Please do not make any
changes to the PZLOCK.DOC or README files.
================================================================================
Features:
* This program requires a valid password in order to gain access to your
system on the boot up of your computer.
* A guest account feature, allowing for you not to have to worry about
using a login and password when one is not required. This saves
time because you won't have to keep removing the program from your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
* A root account. The password on this account is preset and can be
changed.
* Password echoing. All passwords are echoed with a ".".
* Simple to use, this program is very simple to use, just follow the
instructions giving below for operating PZLOCK v1.0.
================================================================================
Releases:
Version 1.0 Complied 5/09/92 First release, any and all bugs found or
reported will be corrected next version.
================================================================================
How to install and use PZLOCK v1.0 and use it.
PZLOCK must be placed in the first line of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
To do this, use a text editor and add the following line:
C:\PZLOCK\LOGIN (The \PZLOCK\ subdirectory may be replaced with
the directory you have choose to place the
LOGIN.EXE)
NOTE: If you wish to have color put a 'c' or 'C' on the command line.
This is 16 color text graphics (Tandy 1000, EGA, or VGA monitors, etc.)
Next you must run the set-up program to create your own accounts.
I have not placed a limit on the number of accounts you can have, but
you really only need one.
To run set-up, type SETUP from the dos prompt if you are in the current
directory of SETUP.EXE. Add a 'c' or 'C' to the command line (SETUP C)
for 16 colors. (See above!)
When you run SETUP it should give you a beginning message telling you to
read this file and the readme file. When it asks to press any key,
press any key.
You can change you master account passwrod from the main menu.
If your system failed for some reason and you have
already installed the PZLOCK program into your autoexec file, fear not.
When it asks for LOGIN: type "ROOT", for password use "PZLOCKROOT".
This will allow you to get past the PZLOCK screen.
If there is system lock up again, either you have a bad copy of PZLOCK
v1.0 or your system will not run PZLOCK v1.0. Try re-loading your copy
from whereever you got it. If it still does not work, then your system
will not run PZLOCK. If you think this is something that could be
corrected by changing something in the software, let me know I will
make the change if possible. Otherwise there isn't much I can do.
================================================================================
How to work with the setup
This prorgam should come with a SETUP.EXE. To run this program
type: SETUP (If you have a monitor displaying 16 colors you can run
setup using SETUP C).
It should give you a beginning screen, press any key to go on. If you
do not have a PZLOGIN.DAT file already, one will be created at this
time. After this you should be given a main menu.
1. If you want to change the password of the root account to one of
your own, press 1 at the main menu. It should ask for 'New Password'. Type
in the password you which to use. After this it should return you to
the main menu.
2. If you want to turn the guest account on or off, type 2. It should
prompt you with a number 1 and number 2. If you press number 1 than
your will turn the guest account on, number 2 will turn it off.
0. This will quit to DOS. You can also press the ESC key.
================================================================================
Logging in:
NOTE: If you set the guest account on, any login or password will
be considered valid! Use this only if you plan to constantly be re-booting
or turning off of your computer (like changing you config.sys or
autoexec.bat files which may cause you to re-boot many times to check
for errors or correct them. This feature is designed for times like
this where login in can be a bare having to do it many times. It also
saves you from having to remove it if you do not want to keep entering
the login and password.)
When the screen prompts you for your password. Please type in
the password you have choosen, again if you have not changed the password
use the password "PZLOCKROOT" if you have not already. It should display
"Thanks for using PZLOCK 1.0". If it tells you "Login incorrect", you
have either misspelled your login or password or there is an error in
your PZLOGIN.DAT file. Press any key after this. It should prompt you for
your password. Password again, if it still failes, then use a floppy disk
and reboot your computer. Try the set-up program again. If this problem persists
please stop using the program and try to notify me. Please be specific when
telling me about your problems. If nothing works, than you have an error in
the software or your PZLOGIN.DAT file. After this, take out a bootable
floopy disk and run your computer off of it. Delete the PZLOGIN.DAT
file and try running the set-up again. This should re-create your
PZLOGIN.DAT file. If you have other errors, please see the 'Things to
do incase of error section below'.
If the problem happens again than you either have a bad copy of the
program or the program will not run on your system. I would recommend
not using the program and trying to get another copy of the orginals or
not using the program.
================================================================================
Thing to do incase of errors:
I do only have two problems listed these are the only one's I ran into
while writing this software and most of it was due to the fact that I had
made a typo in the software. When/if I get more complaints about different
problems I will be sure to include them in this file for future versions.
* If your computer freezes during the set-up or login process this could
be one of many things:
An error has occured in the opening of, closing of, reading of,
or writing to a file. Although I have tried to put safe guards
agaisn't this, sometimes errors still occur. If so you either
have a disk error, file error, or a bad copy of PZLOCK. Try
re-booting or re-running the program, if the problem keeps
happening, try a new copy of PZLOCK. If it still keeps occuring
than either there is a software bug or an error in writing to
that section of the disk. Please discontinue using this program.
If you believe it is a software bug, or find it to be a software
bug, please let me know and I will correct it.
* Constant incorrect login message, this once again could be one of many
things:
There is an error in your PZLOGIN.DAT file, or someone has
changed you password, someone has removed your current account,
or an error in the coding of the software. In this case try
to re-add your account. If the problem continues this will
rid you of two possiblities; someone has changed your login or
password, someone has removed your current account (login and
password). Try deleteing your pzlogin.dat file and running
set-up again. If the problem still occurs you have either
gotten a bad copy of the PZLOCK program or there is a software
bug. Once again try to find another copy and try that,
otherwise it is most likely a software bug and once more let
me know and I will try to correct it.
If you find any other problems with the software and can not find a solution,
please let me know and I will try and fix the problem for you.
================================================================================
Things to look forward to in the next version
Complete boot-up security. Right now the system can be by-passed by booting
off of a disk. I would suggest to avoid this problem, keep your booting disks
in a locked cabnet somewhere. This program was not designed for any super
serious disk protection only simple protection like if you grounded your
kid from the computer or you don't want a certain friend using your computer
when your not around. I am hopefully looking into creating a complete TSR
that will even ask for a password when running a program in DOS for complete
DOS security but for now that is all in the air. I will also be sure to
correct any bugs or typos in the program.
If you have any suggestions for future versions send me a line via snail mail
(US postal service) or BBS.
